Letter from the chair

Dear Guest,
On behalf of the Sabahan Abroad UK organisation it is my pleasure to welcome you to Kaamatan UK 2019. The Kaamatan committee members, along with their families, have been working really hard to make this event happen.

For those of you who are not from Sabah, and have never attended the Kaamatan festival before, Kaamatan, or the harvest festival, is celebrated annually in the state of Sabah in Malaysia. It is the biggest celebration in Sabah as people of different culture, religion, age and political views gather together for this event. The Kaamatan celebration normally lasts a month. It begins on the May 1st and ends on May 31st.

The most easily recognisable features of this celebration are the general merry-making, cultural performances, traditional sports, and the Unduk Ngadau (Harvest Festival Queen) pageant.

This year, we are making Kaamatan more affordable for families. Admission for children under 16 is free. During the day you can bring your own picnic or pre-order your packed lunch. We hope that the weather will be good and you are able to join some of our games and competitions.

Our evening highlights are food, traditional costumes, and dances. There will be fashion shows and dance performances. We are holding traditional food competitions where you can vote for your favourite traditional food.

We normally collect money for charity organisations in Sabah, however, this year we are hoping to raise funds to pay for our traditional music instrument set and the shipping cost of a traditional set of gongs. For the first time the set of gongs will be on display and maybe demonstrated. If more money is raised than what we need to cover the cost of the gongs, we will be donating the remainder to Sabah English Aspiration Society (SEAS).

SEAS is aiming to collect 100,000 books for the Seeds of the Future Initiative in Sabah. If you have any second hand or unwanted books (in good condition), please bring them with you. Each book will be exchanged for a chance to win great lucky draw prizes.

I sincerely hope that you will have a fun and memorable time, and will come back to our next Kaamatan in UK. If we can do anything to make the event more pleasant please let us know. Thank you for joining Kaamatan UK 2019.

Yours sincerely,
Nelda Hendon
